Sprague Preserve

Town of Patterson – 7 acres.

The Sprague Preserve was a gift from Helen Sprague in 2001.  It is a red maple woodlot within the Great Swamp, held for natural resources protection.   It does not offer visitor access.

This small parcel is surrounded by properties owned by The Nature Conservancy, the DEC and Putnam County.   A short distance to the east of Sprague Preserve is Pine Island, a well-known ledge within the Great Swamp.   According the the Patterson Historical Society, the island was used at one time as a camp for a gang of counterfeiters!
