The Robert & Josephine Koestner Preserve

Town of Putnam Valley – 1.68 acres.

Maria Ritchie and Dorothy De Rose are two sisters who in February 2012 donated property held in the family for more than 50 years to the Putnam County Land Trust. This 1.68-acre wooded parcel sits along the east bank of the Peekskill Hollow Brook on White Road in Putnam Valley.

Their parents intended to build their dream home on the site along with a home for each of the sisters.  While summer residents of Lake Carmel, they would visit this property and enjoy picnics on the then-existing lawn. At that time, there were no trees as there are now, except along the brook. Maria recalls a “club” house down the street for the local residents where the neighbors would get together to play cards, visit and sometimes hold dances.

Because of its size and location, this property will be used for nature observation, education and programs. This parcel was named in honor of their parents, The Robert & Josephine Koestner Preserve.
